AWS does not run a continuing-education programme. Unlike CompTIA, Cisco or PMI, you cannot keep an AWS certification alive by logging training hours or attending webinars: every AWS credential is valid for three years from the date it was earned, and staying certified means passing an exam again before that date arrives. The consolation is that AWS makes the second pass materially cheaper — every active certification holder carries a 50% discount voucher for their next exam.
This guide covers the mechanics only: how long each certification lasts, which exams renew which credentials, what recertification costs after the discount, and the free and alternative routes AWS has added. How long are AWS certifications valid?
Every AWS certification — Foundational, Associate, Professional and Specialty — is valid for exactly three years from the date it was earned. There are no shorter or longer tiers, and validity does not vary by exam version. When a certification is renewed, the clock restarts.

The four ways to renew an AWS certification
As of 2026, AWS's recertification policy offers these routes. All of them involve assessment — none is a paperwork-only renewal.
- Retake the current version of the same exam. The default route for every certification level. Note "current version": if you passed the Cloud Practitioner exam as CLF-C01, you would recertify on CLF-C02, the version in force since September 2023.
- Pass a higher-level exam that covers your certification. Passing any Associate or Professional exam renews Cloud Practitioner. Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02) renews Solutions Architect – Associate. DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) renews both Developer – Associate and the CloudOps (formerly SysOps) Associate. This is the efficient path if you were planning to level up anyway — one exam fee, two outcomes.
- Recertify Cloud Practitioner free via AWS Cloud Quest. AWS's recertification page lists a game-based path, AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, as a renewal option for the Foundational credential as of August 2026. AWS's own wording on its availability has been inconsistent since the 2025 beta, so confirm it is offered in your region on aws.amazon.com/certification/recertification/ before relying on it.
- Extend by one year with an AWS Skill Builder subscription. AWS lists a one-year maintenance extension for Associate- and Professional-level certifications tied to an active Skill Builder subscription. It buys time rather than a full three-year reset — check the current terms on the recertification page.
One important restriction: Specialty certifications renew only by retaking the current Specialty exam. A higher-level pass does not cover them, because nothing sits above Specialty in that lane.

A quirk worth knowing if your certification is a renamed or retiring one: SysOps Administrator holders recertify via the renamed CloudOps Engineer exam (SOA-C03) or DOP-C02, since SOA-C02's last day was 29 September 2025. Holders of the retired Machine Learning – Specialty (last sat 31 March 2026) keep an active certification for three years from the date earned, but there is no exam left to renew it on.
What does AWS recertification cost?
AWS exam list prices as of 2026 sit in three tiers — roughly $100 USD for Foundational, $150 for Associate and $300 for Professional and Specialty exams (prices vary by region and currency; confirm on aws.amazon.com). Recertification uses the same exams at the same list prices, which is where the discount matters.
The 50% voucher. Passing any AWS exam places a half-price discount voucher in the Benefits section of your AWS Certification account, valid while you hold an active certification. Applied to recertification, the effective cost becomes roughly:
- Foundational: ~$50
- Associate: ~$75
- Professional / Specialty: ~$150
The voucher works for any future AWS exam, not just the one you are renewing — so it can equally fund the higher-level exam that renews your current credential as a by-product. Two caveats: it is a single voucher, not one per certification, and it is not available to discount a retake after a failed attempt. Fail your recertification exam and the next sitting is at whatever price applies, plus AWS's standard 14-day wait between attempts.

Timing your recertification attempt
Three scheduling rules shape when to book:
- Book before expiry, with a failure buffer. A failed attempt means at least 14 calendar days before you can sit again. Scheduling your recertification exam six to eight weeks before the expiration date leaves room for one retake without losing the credential.
- You cannot bank an early pass indefinitely against the same exam. After passing, AWS bars you from retaking the same exam for two years, except when a new version is released — so recertification naturally happens on the then-current version.
- Reschedules are limited. An exam appointment can be rescheduled at most twice, no later than 24 hours before the exam; cancelling inside 24 hours forfeits the full fee. How these deadline structures compare across providers is covered in certification renewal deadlines explained.
Because recertification exams are the same current-version exams new candidates sit, the sensible preparation step is a gap check rather than a full restudy: review the current exam guide for what changed since your version, then use a timed practice run to confirm which domains have drifted. A worked example: renewing an expiring Solutions Architect – Associate
Suppose your SAA certification expires in November 2026. Your realistic options:
- Cheapest: apply your 50% voucher to a fresh SAA-C03 sitting — roughly $75 — booked for September, leaving retake room.
- Most leverage: apply the voucher to SAP-C02 (~$150 with the discount). Passing renews SAA automatically and upgrades your credential in one sitting — but Professional exams are a significant step up, so this only makes sense if you were preparing for it anyway.
- Stopgap: if AWS's Skill Builder maintenance extension is available to you, a one-year extension can defer the decision — worth checking if the expiry date lands in a bad quarter.
There is no universally right pick: the voucher is single-use, so spend it on the most expensive exam you genuinely intend to pass.
