Certification Exam Costs Explained

What certification exams actually cost across CompTIA, AWS, Cisco, Microsoft, ISC2 and PMI, why prices differ so much, and how pricing tiers work.

AWS does not run a continuing-education programme. Unlike CompTIA, Cisco or PMI, you cannot keep an AWS certification alive by logging training hours or attending webinars: every AWS credential is valid for three years from the date it was earned, and staying certified means passing an exam again before that date arrives. The consolation is that AWS makes the second pass materially cheaper — every active certification holder carries a 50% discount voucher for their next exam.
This guide covers the mechanics only: how long each certification lasts, which exams renew which credentials, what recertification costs after the discount, and the free and alternative routes AWS has added. If you want the broader distinction between exam-based recertification and CE-based renewal across the industry, that comparison lives in renewal vs recertification: what is the difference.
Every AWS certification — Foundational, Associate, Professional and Specialty — is valid for exactly three years from the date it was earned. There are no shorter or longer tiers, and validity does not vary by exam version. When a certification is renewed, the clock restarts.
Your precise expiration date sits in your AWS Certification account, and that is the date to plan around. Miss it and the credential lapses; the practical fallout of an expired certification is a separate question, covered in what happens when a certification expires.
As of 2026, AWS's recertification policy offers these routes. All of them involve assessment — none is a paperwork-only renewal.
One important restriction: Specialty certifications renew only by retaking the current Specialty exam. A higher-level pass does not cover them, because nothing sits above Specialty in that lane.
| Your certification | Renewed by |
|---|---|
| Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) | Retake CLF, any Associate or Professional pass, or Cloud Quest (free path) |
| Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) | Retake SAA, or pass SAP-C02 |
| Developer – Associate (DVA-C02) | Retake DVA, or pass DOP-C02 |
| CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) | Retake SOA-C03, or pass DOP-C02 |
| Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02) | Retake SAP-C02 |
| Security – Specialty (SCS-C03) | Retake the current Specialty exam only |
A quirk worth knowing if your certification is a renamed or retiring one: SysOps Administrator holders recertify via the renamed CloudOps Engineer exam (SOA-C03) or DOP-C02, since SOA-C02's last day was 29 September 2025. Holders of the retired Machine Learning – Specialty (last sat 31 March 2026) keep an active certification for three years from the date earned, but there is no exam left to renew it on.
AWS exam list prices as of 2026 sit in three tiers — roughly $100 USD for Foundational, $150 for Associate and $300 for Professional and Specialty exams (prices vary by region and currency; confirm on aws.amazon.com). Recertification uses the same exams at the same list prices, which is where the discount matters.
The 50% voucher. Passing any AWS exam places a half-price discount voucher in the Benefits section of your AWS Certification account, valid while you hold an active certification. Applied to recertification, the effective cost becomes roughly:
The voucher works for any future AWS exam, not just the one you are renewing — so it can equally fund the higher-level exam that renews your current credential as a by-product. Two caveats: it is a single voucher, not one per certification, and it is not available to discount a retake after a failed attempt. Fail your recertification exam and the next sitting is at whatever price applies, plus AWS's standard 14-day wait between attempts.
Budgeting across the full lifetime of a credential — renewals every three years, alongside any memberships or training — is its own exercise; see certification renewal costs explained for the cross-provider picture.
Three scheduling rules shape when to book:
Because recertification exams are the same current-version exams new candidates sit, the sensible preparation step is a gap check rather than a full restudy: review the current exam guide for what changed since your version, then use a timed practice run to confirm which domains have drifted. ExamPractice's AWS practice exams cover the current exam versions, with free sample questions per exam and full timed simulations for subscribers — a quick way to find out whether three years of hands-on work kept you exam-ready or left version-specific gaps.
Suppose your SAA certification expires in November 2026. Your realistic options:
There is no universally right pick: the voucher is single-use, so spend it on the most expensive exam you genuinely intend to pass.
Recertification policy details — voucher terms, the Cloud Quest path, the Skill Builder extension — have all shifted within the last two years, so treat aws.amazon.com/certification/recertification/ and your AWS Certification account as the source of truth for your exact expiry date and available benefits. Then work backwards: pick your renewal route, book with a buffer, and use your discount where it counts.
Exam facts in this guide were checked against official certification-provider pages on . Fees, exam codes and policies change — confirm on the provider’s own site before you book.
Put it into practice
Reading about an exam only takes you so far. Work through practice questions for your certification and find the gaps before exam day does.
